All children in Year 3 are taught the basic skills of playing the recorder. To give children the opportunity to develop their skills further if they wish, we have a lunch time club that introduces more notes and teaches them how to play in a group with several different parts going on around them. At the beginning of the year the pieces start simply and gradually become more challenging as their skills develop. Children in Years 5 and 6 are given increasingly harder parts, or are given the opportunity to learn the Treble or Tenor recorders, which are larger than the usual Descant.
There is a further recorder group for children who want to come along and practice the pieces we are learning in Recorder Club. This group focuses on children playing as individuals, to improve their confidence ready for playing in a group. These sessions are particularly helpful when we start to learn a new piece.
The school Recorder Club has performed at the Gorleston St. Andrew’s Music Festival and been awarded many trophies for their playing. They also perform at the school Easter and Christmas services at St Andrew and St Peter Church, Blofield to help create the special atmosphere of these lovely services.
