Year 1

Welcome to Year One!

Spring 1

We hope you had a lovely Christmas break with your families and are enjoying your last day. A huge thank you again for our wonderful cards and gifts – very much appreciated!

This half term, P.E will be on a Wednesday and a Friday. Apologies for the change in this again, our timetable with Mr Stocker has changed again. So, children can come to school in their P.E kits on Wednesdays and Fridays. There will be no forest school this half term, so you won’t need to worry about any other change of clothes.

During the next few weeks, we will be exploring The Odd Egg by Emily Gravett and The Comet by Joe Todd-Stanton in English and looking at place value and addition/subtraction up to 20 in Maths. In Science, we will be exploring different groups of animals and in History, we will be learning about past explorers. To support our historical learning, we will be going to the Time and Tide Museum on Friday 23rd January. Further consent/letters about this will be sent from the office shortly.

Please be aware that within our PSHE learning, we will be learning about keeping our private parts private and will be naming these body parts. The children have learnt this before in Reception and it is something we dip in and out of all the time.

Little Wandle books will continue to be given out on a Friday. As always, if you need them longer than the Monday, just let us know and Mrs Jeary will keep the books in the book bags. Please record when you read these in the reading records. Sharing books can be changed any day so please remind your child as they all finish their books at different times.

Further homework, based on Phonics and a little bit of Maths, is attached. It is not something that has to be handed in, but it is something that is super important to support your child with their reading, especially. The attachments below make sense when you have read the homework document. Please let me know if you feel you need any extra support with this or extra resources.

The cold weather continues, for now, so please make sure you wrap your children up as we do try and go outside for break/lunch when we can, and we don’t want them to be too cold. Make sure any wellies are brought back if you took them for the Christmas break.

We look forward to welcoming you all back tomorrow! As always, any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to message me on Tapestry or catch me at the gate.

Autumn 2

We hope you had a wonderful half term break with your families. This half term is always a super busy and exciting one with the lead up to Christmas. As well as rehearsing and performing our nativity later on this term, we will be learning about why Christians celebrate Christmas. We will be reading ‘Dragon Post’ and ‘Leo and the Octopus’ in English and will be practising our writing in lots of forms. In Maths, we will continue with our addition and subtraction work and will move onto shape. We will be exploring seasons in Science and different weather and climate types in Geography. We will also be having a go at learning new skills related to preparing food.

This half term, P.E will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays. There will be no P.E tomorrow, so please don’t worry about rushing around to find the P.E kit. P.E will start from Wednesday onwards.

The children are also super lucky this half term as they will have forest school on Thursday afternoons with Mrs Snape. Please ensure your children have warm and waterproof clothing (when needed) as they will be going out in pretty much all weathers.

Reading homework will continue this half term. Little Wandle books will continue to be given out on a Friday and returned on Mondays, where possible. Sharing books can be changed whenever needed so please encourage your child to do so when you have finished one together. Regarding other homework, this half term is all about making sure children are secure with the basics so please work through this list:

  • Letters are correctly formed and sitting on the line
  • Numbers 0-9 are correctly formed and facing the correct way
  • Counting to 50 forwards
  • Counting from 20 backwards confidently

We look forward to seeing you tomorrow morning! As always, any questions or queries, feel free to contact me over tapestry.

Thank you,

Mrs Coates 😊

Welcome to Year One!

Hello!

I hope you have all had a wonderful summer break. I’m very excited to see some of your familiar faces and meet some new ones this September too!

We will continue to use Tapestry in Year One. Owing to the nature of the Year One curriculum, there may not be as many photos/messages added to the page, but we will keep you updated with the bits and bobs we’re doing in class and any key messages. If you’d like to get in contact with me, please use Tapestry to do so.

Hopefully, you have seen the email from the office regarding drop-off/pick-up arrangements. I have moved into the spare Reception classroom so it will be the same drop-off and pick-up arrangements as last year. Both Miss Tims and I will be on the gate tomorrow morning.

To give a little more information about Year One, I will be holding a ‘Meet the Teacher’ session on Thursday 11th September, 5.00-5.30pm. This will be held in my new classroom. Please come through the usual drop-off gate.

This half term, we will be learning about journeys and exploration in English. We will be using ‘Naughty Bus’ and ‘Astro Girl’ to do this. We will be focusing on place value and addition/subtraction within 10 in our Maths lessons. Humans and our senses will be the key focus for our Science lesson and we will be exploring the history of toys in History. In Art, we will be learning about Kandinsky and doing lots of painting. Although we will be learning within ‘subjects’, our plan is to continue with a Reception style of teaching, especially in the afternoons and gradually, we will become more ‘formal’.

We will have very similar break and lunch times to Reception so they will already be familiar with these routines. We have fruit/vegetable snacks available for your child at break time. If they are particular about what they like/dislike, they are welcome to bring their own snack, but it must be a piece of fruit or a vegetable. In addition to their snack, please make sure they have their water bottles with them.

Please can you also bring in art aprons/shirts/old tops for your child. We will keep these in their lockers ready for our messy lessons. In addition, we will have P.E lessons on a Wednesday and Thursday this year. Please can children come to school in their P.E kits on those days. There will be no P.E tomorrow, so usual uniform please.

We’ve had lots of lovely weather this summer but I’m sure rain will be on the forecast. During rainy weather, we ask that children put on their wellies/waterproofs, so please make sure they have these in school. They will be playing outside in lots of different weathers.

To sum up the above, please ensure your child has:

  • Fruit/veg snack (if they do not want the one provided)
  • Water bottle
  • Something to wear for messy play (apron/old shirt)
  • Wellies/waterproofs
  • Bookbag (we will start Little Wandle books next week)

Mrs Jeary and I are really looking forward to seeing you tomorrow! :)
