Year 6

Summer 1

Welcome to summer 1. I hope everyone had a restful Easter break and is ready and raring to go!

Our theme for our learning this half-term is Fete v Free Will.

Where possible, our subjects will link to this topic. In English, we will be using the books Romeo and Juliet and The Wind in the Wall as inspiration for our writing. In Science we will be looking at electricity. This links to the work we will be doing in Geography about resources. In DT we are going to create moving toys whilst incorporating some of our Science and Geography learning into our projects too.

There are 2 PE lessons each week. These will take place on a Wednesday and a Thursday with Mr Stocker. Please make sure children come to school in their PE kits on these days. They will need suitable outdoor clothing as lessons will take place outside whenever possible.

A curriculum overview for the half-term can be found below.

SATs

There are just 4 weeks until SATs. The children worked extremely hard throughout the spring term and are ready to sit their SATs during the week of 11th May. We will continue to revise various topics in Reading, SPaG and Maths and well do the following:

  • We will continue to revise the topics in Maths and SPaG in our morning work.
  • Maths after-school club will continue on Mondays 3:20 - 4pm.
  • A piece of maths homework on a Friday that links to the class work will continue to be set with a supplementary task from the maths revision book.
  • Intervention/Booster groups for maths and reading will continue.

Homework

Reading

The expectation is that children read 5 times a week. We ask that reading records are in school every day and on a Friday they will be checked. Where possible, please could children complete their quizzes at home. Click the link here. Accelerated Reader

Spellings

On a Monday, the children will be given a list of words for the week. As well as working on them in school, they will bring them home in order to practice them daily. Spelling books should be brought into school every Monday so new words can be inserted.

Maths

To begin with, there will be a piece of maths homework relating to the class work uploaded each week on a Friday. A paper copy will also be available too. This is optional but I would recommend that all children attempt it. If you have purchased the maths revision book I will suggest a page in there to complete too.
