The government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their wealthier peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.

Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit. However they will be held accountable for how they have used the additional funding to support pupils from low-income families. Since September 2012, schools have been required to publish online information about how they have used the premium.
The Pupil Premium was introduced in April 2011 and eligibility for the Pupil Premium was extended in 2012-13 to pupils who have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any point in the last 6 years. Nationally, this group has generally performed less well academically, in comparison with other pupils who have not been eligible for FSM.

The Pupil Premium has been introduced to help rectify this issue. The Pupil Premium for 2023-2024  is  £1,455 for each qualifying pupil. The premium for children whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces is £335. This service premium is designed to address the emotional and social well-being of these pupils.
