Governor Profiles

Ken D'Rosario (Chair of Governors)

I’ve been involved as a member of Blofield School Governors for a good few years (18 on the last count!) taking the Chair several years ago. My involvement began with my two children attending the school. Both my children are now adults but I have never once considered not being involved with a wonderful, vibrant, inspiring, children focused environment, such as Blofield Primary.

Away from Blofield Primary I am husband to Sarah, Mrs D in the school office and classrooms, run my own sport coaching business delivering a range of sports such as Fencing, Archery, Football, Basketball and Gymnastics into primary schools; work as the Norfolk County Football Association Welfare Officer providing welfare and safeguarding support, guidance and management to all grassroots football clubs across Norfolk; Tutor Safeguarding and Welfare training to professional and volunteer sports coaches; Manage Youth and Adult Football teams for Blofield United; and support Chelsea!

In my spare time I sleep, cycle, enjoy the theatre, cinema and sleep some more!

Please contact me on 07777 607567 if you want to know anything about the governing body or indeed if you have something you wish to know about the school. I may not be able to answer your enquiry directly but I can make sure it receives appropriate attention.

Paul Culley-Barber Vice-Chair (Parent Governor)

Hello!  I’m Paul, but you may know me better as Flynn and Taliesin’s dad. I have been a parent governor since September 2014 and I sit on the Finance / Premises committee.

In May 2015 I took on the role of Pupil Premium governor. This involves working with the school to ensure they are wisely spending / utilising the additional funding school receives for eligible pupils, and to ensure that those pupils are making progress in their education.

I’m normally in the playground on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday morning – feel free to come and talk to me about anything you wish.

Outside of my involvement with school, I work at Aviva in the IT department. I used to work on pensions systems but have recently moved into a new area for business process automation.

I’m a member of the Blofield Allotment Association and we have a plot up at the Jubilee Allotment site (just beyond Norwich Camping / PYO). Flynn and Taliesin certainly enjoy the produce that our little plot provides.

In 2015 I was elected to the Blofield Parish Council and was involved with the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, where in 2016 the Neighbourhood Plan was adopted by the parish.

Andrew Proctor  LA Governor

I am a local authority appointed governor who is very pleased to work with Blofield School since 2009.

I am currently Chairman of the Finance Committee.

I am Leader of Broadland District Council, representing the Brundall Ward, and a Member of Norfolk County Council, representing the Blofield & Brundall Division.

My professional career has been primarily in finance and banking. Prior to moving to the Brundall area in 1988 I was Operations Manager at Deutsche Bank in London and had previously worked in London and the Far East with HSBC. I am currently the Practice Manager of a firm of solicitors specialising in criminal defence work as well as doing consultancy and peer review work in local government.

Teresa Doggett (Headteacher)

I took up my appointment as Headteacher in September 2016, a role that I am thoroughly enjoying

and is certainly keeping me very busy. I am proud to be Headteacher of this exceptional and caring school.

Before moving into education I worked as a buyer for Lotus Cars, during

which time I studied for an ONC then an HNC in Business Studies

and an HNC in Computing.  I then studied for my degree and Post

Graduate Certificate in Education at U.E.A.

During my career in education, I have taught every age group from nursery

to Year 7 and have been school leader for almost all curriculum subjects.

I have worked in a wide range of schools, including Primary, Infant Schools,

a Junior and a Middle School. I completed the National Professional

Qualification for Headship at the same time as the National Award for

Special Educational Needs Coordination – a very busy year!

I am fortunate in having three wonderful children: a daughter and two sons.  As well as spending time with my family I enjoy church bell-ringing, singing in a choir, reading (I belong to two book clubs), playing in a recorder group and going to the theatre.

I look forward to working with everyone in the school community over the coming years to continue the good work that has gone on in the past, and to move forward with new innovations to enable the school to continue to be worthy of the Ofsted accolade of Outstanding.

Diane Jeary (Staff Governor)

I’m Diane, Year 1 Teacher’s Assistant, and a staff governor who sits on the Curriculum Committee.

Following an earlier career in the Banking Industry lasting 25 years, I have been part of the school’s staff for the last 15 years, and have filled a Teacher’s Assistant role for a period in excess of 11 years.

Whilst originating from Sheringham, I have spent the vast majority of my married life in Blofield and Brundall.  My daughter, a former pupil of the school, is currently undertaking a Nursing degree course at the University of East Anglia.  In my free time, I am a keen gardener and a staunch Norwich City fan.

Hilda Taylor (Co-opted Governor)

Hello. I am Hilda Taylor and I live in Brundall.  I have been a Governor at Blofield School for over 9 years.

I serve on the Personnel and Curriculum Committees

I'm one of the elder statesmen of the governing body! I qualified as a teacher in 1966 (work it out!!) but within a few years had moved into training within industry, performing secretarial and management training, eventually being promoted to IT Training Manager for a major pharmaceutical company.

I have always had a strong interest in why and how people learn. I thoroughly enjoy being part of the dynamic team at Blofield Primary School, and performing my task as a 'critical friend'. I most enjoy the times I visit school to undertake observations, and to assist with recruitment. Governor meetings are a necessary evil!

Outside of school I enjoy travelling - the further away my destination is from the UK, the better I like it! I like to travel independently and alone whenever it is safe to do so.

Locally, I spend lots of time on the Broads network - kayaking and motor boating - and occasional yachting trips.

I am also involved with various charities, but my real love is the charity work I undertake for Guide Dogs; this is mainly fundraising, but also whenever possible boarding a guide dog for an incapacitated owner.

Simon McDougall (Co-opted Governor)

I joined the Governing Body in May 2015 as a co-opted governor, having read in the Parish Council minutes that there was a vacancy. I was shortly to take retirement and wanted to help my local school by drawing on 42 years of experience in banking and school administration. I am a member of the Finances & Premises Committee.

My family and I have lived in Blofield since 1988. I worked for Barclays Bank for about 30 years, mainly in corporate banking but including spells at one of our training centres where I both wrote and delivered courses based upon lending and technical training. The last 10 years of my working life was spent as a member of the administration team at Costessey High School (now Ormiston Victory Academy), carrying out a variety of duties which included that of Business Manager.

My hobbies include gardening, playing the drums (usually once a year at the Hethersett panto!) and music generally. I am a loyal supporter and season ticket holder at Norwich City.

I am delighted to be a governor at Blofield Primary where I am a member of the Personnel and Finance sub-committees.  My governor specialism is Maths.

Lizzie Brooks (Parent Governor)

Hi! My name is Lizzie Brooks and I have been a parent governor since March 2016. My eldest son Matthew is currently in Year 1 and William will start school in September 2018.

I am delighted to be on the Governing Body of such a successful primary school and I, along with the other governors, seek to support the school to be the best it can be and maintain its excellent standards. As well as attending full Governing Body meetings, I am also a member of the Curriculum Committee and the link Governor for Languages. Having the opportunity to visit school and see it in action has been fantastic!

Professionally I have been a primary school teacher for ten years and am now working part time at a large Norfolk junior school as the Languages teacher. The experience I have in education has been particularly useful for my role as Governor and the role has supported me in my work too.

When I am not working I enjoy spending time with family and friends, swimming and reading.

If at any time you wish to contact me with matters relating to my role as Governor please feel free to catch me on the playground Monday to Wednesday. Also, if you are interested in finding out more about the role of Parent Governor please feel free to come and chat to me.  I am really looking forward to working with other parents in my role.

Paul Myhill (Parent Governor)

I have been a Parent Governor at the school since September 2014. My eldest son, Ralph, is a pupil at the school.
As well as attending the full Governing body meetings, I am also part of the Finance and Premises committee, additionally acting as a Governor Health and Safety representative.

As Parent Governors, we aim to contribute to helping the School maintain its excellent standards. Please don't hesitate to approach me should you like to query or suggest anything.

I currently serve in the RAF as a weapons engineer. At the time of writing I've served 15 years mostly at Marham but quite a few months away in the Middle East, USA and around Europe.

Outside of work I enjoy all things sport related, especially teaching Ralph (and as soon as he can walk, Theo!) all I can about football, in particular Norwich City!

Emma Covington

My name is Emma Covington and I have been a Parent Governor at the school since November 2015. My son Joe is currently in Year 3 and I also have a daughter called Jessica.

I joined the Governing body whilst I was on maternity leave in 2015 and I have since returned to work as a part-time secondary school and sixth form teacher. I am currently teaching A Level Sociology and Key Stage 3 Geography. I have worked as a teacher either full or part time since 2006. Over that time, I have also taught A Level Psychology and Health and Social Care as well as Key Stage 3 History, Citizenship and Religious Studies.

Aside from work my young daughter keeps me very busy; we go to toddler groups and I also spend a lot of my time with various members of my wider extended family!

Part of my governor role is as a member of the Curriculum Committee and I am the governor responsible for overseeing English provision within the school. Amongst other things, both roles involve analysing data and asking challenging questions. I am finding that my teaching experience is helpful for this role despite the vast differences between primary and secondary settings.

I do the ‘school run’ on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Please feel free to approach me about anything school related.

Tom Cheongvee

I have grown up in Norfolk (attending Freethorpe Primary School & Acle High School) and after completing my Maths degree at Cambridge University and teacher training in Saffron Walden moved back to Blofield in 2009.

My eldest child, Isaac, is in Miss Baker’s class with my daughter, Betsy, due to start at Blofield this September so have a great interest in helping to ensure that Blofield Primary School is governed as well as possible. I have enjoyed immensely watching how well Isaac has developed in such a short time at Blofield and do my best as a parent to help support with his reading, writing, maths and general encouragement of curiosity!  I work in education; I am the Curriculum Team Leader at East Norfolk Sixth Form College in charge of Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, IT and Financial Studies.

Roles & Governor Types

Chair of Governors

A chair of governors works with the headteacher to promote and maintain high standards of educational achievement, ensures that the governing body sets a clear vision, ethos and strategic direction  for the school, with the governing body holds the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and for the performance management  of staff and ensures oversight of the financial performance of the school and effective use of the schools resources

Vice Chair

The chair, with support from the vice chair, is responsible for ensuring the effective functioning of the board. Where the chair is absent from any meeting or there is at the time a vacancy in the office of the chair, the vice-chair is to act as chair for all purposes

Co-opted Governors

Co-opted Governors are people invited to join a governing body by the other governors. They usually live or work in the community served by the school or they are people committed to good governance and the success of the school.

Staff Governors

Staff Governors are in a unique position on a governing body. By definition staff governors are involved in the day to day running of the school and yet are asked, as governors, to put this to one side and participate in the governing body’s work as ‘strategic managers’.  This is not always easy to do!  However, the role of the staff governor offers an opportunity to make a real contribution to the strategic management of the school, providing an interesting and rewarding dimension to work.

Parent Governors

A Parent Governor is a representative and not a delegate of parents. Parent governors do not have to vote in a particular way because of pressure to do so by parents. Objectivity, however, is essential. Parent governors are elected by other parents and it is important to establish a rapport with the parental body that elected them, whilst continuing to maintain a strategic approach to school governance. Parent Governors are not there to promote the interests of their own children but all children in the setting.
